The test engine in Bredbandskollen is built in Flash. For us to be able to perform a test we need this plugin (Flash Player) loaded into the browser and then establish communication with javascript. Unless this succeeds, or if the Flash player is not installed, you can not start the test. If this happens, a popup will appear with information about this a couple of seconds after the website loaded.

Before other troubleshooting, you need to turn off any addons in your browser that could block Flash or javascript. Examples are Flashblock (Firefox <V42), NoScript (Firefox), Script Block (Chrome) and Flash Control (Chrome & Firefox). Make sure to always keep your browser updated.

If you are running a version of the Adobe Flash player called " Extended Support Release" we recommend that you update Flash to the latest standard release instead. Adobe will stop supporting this version on 11/10, 2016.

Try our new macOS Bredbandskollen app!

We have recently released an beta version of our app for macOS that does not require Flash. The app is only available in swedish at this point but if you want to try it, just click on "starta mätningen" an you are on your way. With this app you can test your broadband speed without the use of a web browser. The app is free and can be downloaded in the App Store at this location: https://itunes.apple.com/se/app/bredbandskollen/id1147976909?mt=12

Below are our tips for debugging them common browsers.

Chrome (PC / Mac)

In Chrome the Flash player is integrated with the browser. Therefore you do not need to install Flash Player separately, but make sure your browser version is up to date. In addition, Google (that develops Chrome) wants to encourage open web standards and therefore could start blocking Flash by the beginning of Q4, 2016.

The following situations are common.

Hand installed flash blocking extensions

If there are any manually installed extensions that block Flash, please click on the Chrome menu at top right (the one with three bars on top of each other). Then select More Tools> Extensions. Then disable the add-on that is blocking Flash by unchecking the Enabled check box. Examples of such extensions is Stop Flash Flash Blocker and Flash Control.

If www.bredbandskollen.se not have been allowed to run Flash

If the domain www.bredbandskollen.se is blocked from running Flash you will see a puzzle icon in the address bar with a red X next to it. Please click on the icon and select "Always allow plug-ins on http://www.bredbandskollen.se". Then click "Done" and reload the page in your browser.

If Flash is disabled

It may be that Flash is not enabled in your browser. Check this by:

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. In the address bar at the top, type chrome://plugins and press Return
  3. Scroll down to the Adobe Flash Player
  4. Click Enable for Adobe Flash Player
  5. Reload www.bredbandskollen.se

Firefox (PC / Mac)

Remove any flash blocking extensions

If there are manually installed extensions that block Flash, open the Firefox menu at top right (the one with three bars on top of each other) and select Extensions. Then disable those add-ons, such as Flashblock. Make sure the Extensions is selected in the left menu.

Enable Flash

If you can not measure it may be because Flash is not installed or the Flash Player version you have installed at the moment is too old. If that is the case, Firefox could block it.

If you receive an pop up error message on that says "Bredbandskollen could not perform the test", then flash either missing, outdated or be disabled in your browser. Test this by performing these steps:

  1. Select Extensions in the Firefox menu at top right
  2. Select Plug-ins in the left menu
  3. In the list, look for Shockwave Flash. If you find it, it means that Flash is installed. In this case choose Always activate it in the drop down menu to the right. Proceed to reload the page.

However, if you do not find Flash in the listing, you need to download it. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://get.adobe.com/se/flashplayer and click Install Now. Let the installation file download
  2. Then close Firefox
  3. Open the installation file you just downloaded and follow the installation instructions
  4. Restart Firefox and try to measure again

If you still have problems, please take a look at Mozilla's own page: https://support.mozilla.org/sv/kb/keep-flash-up-to-date-and-troubleshoot-problems

If the test works but you cannot share your result on Facebook you might need to disable the built in Firefox tracking protection. This applies to version 42 and beyond. Read more here: https://developer.mozilla.org/sv-SE/Firefox/Privacy/Tracking_Protection.

Safari (Mac)

Note that if you run version 10 of Safari flash is blocked by default. Then you must manually enable Flash in the Safari settings, see below.

Remove any flash blocking extensions

In later versions of Safari, there are not so many extensions that block Flash. But if you should have such extensions installed, eg ClickToFlash, please go Safari> Preferences and click on the Extensions tab. Locate any such add-ons and uncheck the checkbox to the left of Enable [extension name].

Install / Enable Flash

If you receive an pop up error message on that says "Bredbandskollen could not perform the test" then Flash is either not installed or is blocked in Safari settings. Test that by performing these steps:

  1. Open Preferences in the Safari menu in the upper left
  2. Then select the Security tab
  3. Then click the Website settings button in the Internet plug-ins section. If Flash is installed the Adobe Flash Player is visible in the listing to the left. Choose Allow or Allow Always in the drop-down menu to the right of www.bredbandskollen.se (requires Bredbandskollen open in the browser).

If Flash does not installed then follow steps below to do this:

  1. Go to https://get.adobe.com/se/flashplayer and click "Install Now". Let the installation file download and then close Safari
  2. Open the installation file you just downloaded and follow the installation instructions
  3. Restart Safari
  4. If you when loading the page get a popup with the text "Do you want to allow the site www.bredbandskollen.se use the plug-in Adobe Flash Player?" Then Safari is set to ask for permission to run Flash on bredbandskollen.se. In this situation you should choose to click on Trust which will let bredbandskollen.se load the flash plug-in.

Internet Explorer (PC)

When you use Explorer 9 or higher there can be a problem with the Flash player being disabled, even if Flash is installed in the browser. If you are running version 10 or higher, Flash is integrated into the browser. In this case, please keep your browser up to date. Any new versions of the Flash player will be installed when you update your browser. Problems may also be related to ActiveX Filtering. Please try these steps:

  1. Open Internet Explorer and go to https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html
  2. Click Check Now
  3. In the system information that appears you can now read if you have Flash installed. If not, follow the instructions in step 2 on the page you are.

If Flash is installed but the test fails, Flash could be disabled. Please try this:

  1. Click on the tool icon top right (the one that looks like a cog)
  2. In the drop-down menu that appears, select Manage Extensions
  3. In the pop-up window that appears, click Toolbars and Extensions to the left
  4. In the list of add-ons, look for Shockwave Flash Object, highlight it by clicking on it
  5. Details about this plug-in will be shown. In the lower right corner, click the Enable button. (If Flash Player is already activated the fault lies elsewhere)
  6. Then close the popup window and reload www.bredbandskollen.se. Hopefully, it is better to measure now

If you still cannot perform a test, ActiveX Filtering could be enabled. In this case, click on the cog icon in the upper right corner, then select Security, and check the menu for the ActiveX filtering.

Edge (PC)

In Edge, Flash is integrated with the browser, so there is no need to install Flash separately. It is a good idea to keep your browser up to date. Any new versions of the Flash player will be installed when you update your browser. If for some reason you can not measure Flash could be disabled. Go through these steps to fix this:

  1. Click on the "..." button in the upper right corner to enter the Edge menu
  2. Then select the menu item Settings
  3. Then scroll down to the Show advanced settings and locate the slider slider Use Adobe Flash Player and slide it to the On position
  4. Reload www.bredbandskollen.se and try to do a test

Opera (PC/Mac)

When using Opera, problems with Flash may be caused by it being disabled or blocked, even if it is already installed in the browser.

First you need to make sure that the Opera Turbo function is not active, when this function blocks Flash. Do this by making sure "Opera Turbo" is not checked in the upper left Opera menu.

Now when we know that Opera Turbo is not active, lets check if Flash is installed by:

  1. Open Opera and go to https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html
  2. Click Check Now
  3. In the system information that appears you can now read if you have Flash installed. If not, follow the instructions on the screen.

If Flash is installed, but you cannot perform a test it could be disabled. If so, then:

  1. Click on the Settings menu option in the Opera menu in the upper left
  2. In the left column, select Web Sites
  3. Then locate the section Plugins
  4. Ensure that the Run all plug-in content (recommended) is selected
  5. Reload www.bredbandskollen.se. Hopefully, this will solve the problem

Linux

Bredbandskollen does not currently offer a graphic or web-based measurement tool for Linux. You can still measure your internet speed with the help of our command line tool bbk_cli which you can read more about, and download here.

It still does not work?

If you still can not measure, please send an email to support@bredbandskollen.se.
